Wynonna Earp: Vengeance Review: Fan Love Against Thin Stakes

This Wynonna Earp: Vengeance review starts with a simple point: the film is made for people who already love Purgatory and its stubborn, wisecracking heroine. Directed by Paolo Barzman and written by Emily Andras, the 2024 Canadian reunion movie brings the gang back for one more fight. It is an action drama with a lot of heart and a lighter touch on its plot.

Wynonna Earp: Vengeance Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The plot is easy to follow. Wynonna Earp comes home to Purgatory and finds a new threat waiting: a psychotic seductress who wants revenge on her and everyone she cares about. The enemy is personal, and that sets the tone for the whole film.

The story is built around loyalty, family and the cost of protecting people you love. Newcomers can follow the basics, but the emotional shorthand clearly rewards fans of the series. At 96 minutes, the film moves quickly and doesn't spend long on setup.

What Works in Wynonna Earp: Vengeance

The biggest strength is the chemistry. These characters have history, and the film leans on it with easy banter, teasing and real warmth. That lived-in feel is hard to fake, and it carries many scenes.

• Tone: The film mixes supernatural action with dry humor and sincere drama.

• Pace: A short runtime keeps the story brisk.

• Fan service done with care: Reunions feel earned rather than hollow.

The central threat also gives Wynonna something personal to fight, which is more engaging than a generic monster. If you enjoy action movie reviews with a strong sense of character, this has appeal.

Wynonna Earp: Vengeance Cast and Performances

Melanie Scrofano is the heart of the film as Wynonna, balancing swagger, exhaustion and humor with obvious ease. Tim Rozon returns as John Henry "Doc" Holliday and keeps his charming, rascally energy. Their scenes remain a highlight.

Dominique Provost-Chalkley (Waverly Earp) and Katherine Barrell (Nicole Haught) give the story its emotional anchor, with a tender relationship that feels natural. Karen Knox plays Mina Starratt and Dani Kind appears as Mercedes Gardner, adding menace and personality to the wider story.

Where Wynonna Earp: Vengeance Stumbles

The main problem is scale. This is a movie with a television budget and a television feel, and some action scenes lack punch. The villain's threat is clear, but the stakes can feel smaller than the film promises.

It also assumes you know the characters. Viewers new to the series may miss the weight behind certain moments, and the plot leans on familiar beats. The drama here works best as a reward for loyal viewers.

Is Wynonna Earp: Vengeance Worth Watching?

Yes, if you are a fan of the series, and it is a more mixed prospect for everyone else. The film is warm, funny and quick, and the cast clearly enjoy being back together. Its rough edges are easier to forgive when you already care about the characters.

The TMDB audience score of 6.8 out of 10, from 34 votes, matches that view: a pleasant, fan-focused reunion rather than a breakthrough. For background on the show and its characters, see the Wynonna Earp film page on IMDb. Fans of genre blends may also like our Western movie reviews.
