Thunder Rose (Steel Rose) (Pili Meigui) (2025) Review: A Short Undercover Action Gamble

This Thunder Rose review covers a 2025 Chinese action crime drama that packs an undercover cop story into just 85 minutes. Directed by Haolun Fan, it arrived online in China in April 2025 with little fanfare and very few published reviews. So is it a hidden gem or a forgettable stopover? Here is a spoiler-free look.

Thunder Rose Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Thunder Rose plot centres on Xiao Chen, a female police officer from Lingbei City. Summaries describe her as a special police or SWAT officer, which sets up a fighter who is as comfortable with tactics as with a tense conversation. She goes undercover to get inside a cross-border criminal gambling syndicate.

That is a familiar setup, and fans of Asian crime cinema will recognise the pieces: a false identity, a dangerous boss, and the constant risk of exposure. The film is also known as Steel Rose on iQIYI, and its original Chinese title is 霹雳玫瑰 (Pili meigui). Nothing beyond this opening premise is worth revealing here.

What Works in Thunder Rose

The strongest idea is the lead character. A woman cop who must hide her training and survive among criminals gives the film a clear hook, and the title promises both toughness and something more delicate. In theory, that contrast suits an action drama well.

The short running time is another advantage. At 85 minutes, the film has little room for padding, so a story like this can move quickly from setup to trouble. If you like lean genre films that respect your evening, that matters.

The genre mix also has potential:

• Action set pieces built around a trained officer

• Crime-thriller tension from the undercover mission

• Drama from the personal cost of living a double life

If you enjoy this kind of mix, our action movie reviews and crime movie reviews cover similar territory.

Thunder Rose Cast and Performances

The Thunder Rose cast lists Ai Lin, Xin Lu, Guotao Su, Xu Yueqing, An Zehao and He Yongsheng. Xiao Chen is the lead role, but I could not verify which actor plays which character beyond that, so I will not guess.

This is a smaller production without major international names. That can be a plus, since unfamiliar faces often make an undercover story feel more believable. It can also mean uneven performances, especially in dialogue-heavy scenes.

The film hangs on whoever plays the lead. An undercover role needs a performer who can show fear and confidence in the same glance. Viewers should watch for how convincingly she sells that tension.

Where Thunder Rose Stumbles

The biggest concern is the lack of any strong critical backing. I found no published critics' reviews, and the early audience score on IMDb is low at 3.7/10, though it comes from only seven ratings. That is far too small a sample to be conclusive, but it is not an encouraging start.

The premise is also well worn. Undercover-cop stories live or die on their details, such as sharp scenes, surprising choices and characters who feel real. A film this short may struggle to develop its villains or give the gambling syndicate a distinct identity.

Budget could be a further limit. Small-scale action films sometimes rely on repeated locations and quick editing to hide the gaps. Temper your expectations if you are hoping for blockbuster spectacle.

Is Thunder Rose Worth Watching?

It is worth watching only if you already enjoy Chinese undercover action and do not mind taking a chance on an obscure title. The premise is solid, the runtime is short, and the cost of trying it is low. But the thin reception and lack of professional reviews mean it is not a safe recommendation for casual viewers.

If you are asking about the Thunder Rose release date, the IMDb listing gives China, April 9, 2025 (internet). I found no confirmed US theatrical date, and I cannot confirm where to watch it beyond its listing on iQIYI under the title Steel Rose. Check the IMDb page for current details.
