This The Savior of the World review looks at a compact Chinese fantasy action film directed by Li Fei. It runs just 71 minutes, yet it tries to pack in demons, sects, a legendary artifact and a trip to the underworld. The result is busy, colorful and very fast.

The Savior of the World Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Savior of the World plot opens with an ancient demon reborn after a hundred years. It wants to unite the three realms under its rule, and disciples of the Celestial Master Sect rise up to stop it. In its final moments, the demon moves its soul into the body of the sect's future leader, Wang Xian Zhi, and waits for the right moment to return.

Years later, the grown Wang Xian Zhi sets out to suppress that power. With his close friends Zhu Yan and Xiao Ling'er, he travels to Banbu Duo to find the Supreme Heavenly Tome, an artifact said to seal the demon. After many hardships, the trio reaches Wangchuan and meets a larger danger.

A rival who craves the sect leader's seat also enters the picture and sends a deadly enchantress after the heroes. Along the way the group is pulled into a side story involving a ferryman and a female spirit. Sources spell the lead's name both Wang Xian Zhi and Wang Xuanzhi, so expect some variation in subtitles.

What Works in The Savior of the World

The film does not waste time. The quest structure is easy to follow, and each location brings a new obstacle, so the story never sits still for long.

  • Lore: There is plenty of fantasy world-building, and it leans maximalist rather than minimal.

  • Production design: The sets and costumes are nice enough, according to the one critic review I could find, and they give the underworld setting some texture.

  • Pace: At 71 minutes, it never overstays its welcome.

Fans of this kind of Chinese fantasy will recognize the mix of sect rivalries, spirit worlds and sealed artifacts. It is comfort food for the genre, and it knows it.

The Savior of the World Cast and Performances

The Savior of the World cast includes Ryan Kuo, Lü Yanbei, Zhang Jiachuan, Mao Fan, Zhao Qihang and Wang Hongzhe, who appears as Wang Zhongyuan. I can't tie every name to a role from the information available, so I won't guess at who plays whom beyond that credit.

The trio at the story's center is built on friendship, which gives the quest some warmth. The short running time leaves little room for any performer to build a deep character, though. Most scenes serve plot delivery first and emotion second.

Where The Savior of the World Stumbles

The biggest problem is speed. The one review I found says the only thing setting the film apart is how fast the plot is told, and that it almost feels like a 70-minute recap. That matches the sense that big events are summarized rather than felt.

The lore is rich, but it arrives in a rush. A newcomer may struggle to keep track of the realms, the sects and the rivalries. Emotional beats, such as the bond between the heroes or the burden of the demonic spirit, get little space to land.

Critical data is also thin. TMDB shows a single vote and a score of 1/10, which is too small a sample to mean much. The review I found rated the film 3.0/5 and called it decent fun, but mainly for hardcore genre fans.

Is The Savior of the World Worth Watching?

It is worth watching only if you already love Chinese fantasy action and want something short. The film delivers lore, spectacle and a clear quest, but it rarely slows down enough to make you care deeply. Think of it as a quick, busy snack rather than a full meal.

The Savior of the World release date was 3 January 2025, and it carries a 71-minute runtime, so the time risk is low. Who Will Enjoy The Savior of the World

  • Fans of Chinese fantasy and sect-and-demon stories who enjoy dense lore.

  • Viewers who want a short action film they can finish in one sitting.

  • Genre completists who like sets, costumes and quest plots more than character drama.

Pros

  • Brisk 71-minute runtime
  • Rich fantasy lore
  • Nice sets and costumes
  • Clear quest structure

Cons

  • Plot feels like a rushed recap
  • Thin character development
  • Confusing for genre newcomers

Our Verdict

A fast, lore-heavy Chinese fantasy quest that mostly pleases genre devotees. It moves so quickly that story and emotion are left behind.
