The Real Monkey King: Bufashan (Zhen Jia Meihouwang: Bufashan) (2025) Review: A Magic-Free Inn Full of Liars

This The Real Monkey King: Bufashan review looks at a 2025 Chinese fantasy-action film that drops the Journey to the West legend into a closed-room guessing game. Directed by Sean Xiao Liu, it runs a tight 96 minutes. Here is what to expect, with no spoilers.

The Real Monkey King: Bufashan Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The plot centres on the Bufa Mountain inn, a place where magic simply does not work. Strangers arrive from many directions, including travellers from the Western Regions, and nearly everyone carries a secret agenda. The monk's party joins them, and even they keep their true identities hidden.

That setup turns a classic quest into something closer to a "werewolf game", the party-game style of bluffing and suspicion. Who can be trusted, and who is only pretending? The film builds its first act on that question.

A note on sources: some early descriptions of the film talk about an identity crisis and memory manipulation. The published synopsis we found describes the inn mystery instead, so this review sticks to that version of the story.

What Works in The Real Monkey King: Bufashan

The best idea is the rule that magic is banned. Fans of the Monkey King tales expect flying, shape-shifting and showy powers. Taking those away forces the characters to rely on wits, bluffing and fists, which is a fresh angle for this much-adapted legend.

The single-location mystery also suits the short runtime. A contained setting keeps the pace brisk and gives the film a clear hook that casual viewers can grasp quickly.

• A familiar legend with a new twist on its rules

• A compact 96-minute length

• A blend of martial action and whodunit suspicion

The Real Monkey King: Bufashan Cast and Performances

The listed cast includes Chen Long, Nan Sheng, Yan Jie, 南伏龙 and Gong Haibin. The sources we found do not say which actor plays which role, so we will not guess at character names here.

A hidden-identity story lives or dies on its ensemble, because every face has to look both trustworthy and suspicious. That is a demanding brief, and it makes this cast list a point of interest for anyone who follows Chinese genre cinema. The screenplay is credited to Da Wei.

Where The Real Monkey King: Bufashan Stumbles

There is little published critical reception to lean on. We found no review aggregate scores and no critic quotes, so the film arrives without an established reputation either way. Viewers should go in with measured expectations.

The concept also carries risk. Bluffing games work best when the rules are clear and the clues are fair, and a short film has limited time to develop a large group of suspects. With so many strangers sharing the stage, some characters may end up thin.

Long-time fans may also miss the spectacle. A Monkey King story without magic is a bold choice, but it asks the audience to accept a quieter kind of fantasy.

Is The Real Monkey King: Bufashan Worth Watching?

Yes, if you are curious about a Journey to the West story told as a mystery. The premise is original, the runtime is short, and the genre mix of action, adventure and fantasy gives it plenty of variety.

The lack of critical consensus means this is a cautious recommendation rather than a confident one. If the hook appeals to you, it is a low-commitment watch. For background on the film, see its TMDB page. You can also browse our fantasy movie reviews for similar picks.

The film was released in China on 29 December 2025. We could not confirm a US release date or where to stream it, so check local listings.
