This Tenzing review starts with a simple point: it is about time Tenzing Norgay got a film with his own name on it. Jennifer Peedom, known for her mountain documentaries, directs this Australian biographical drama with Genden Phuntsok in the lead. It is respectful, handsome and quietly moving, if a little safe.

Tenzing Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Tenzing plot begins in childhood. A young Tenzing meets the British climber George Mallory, and the encounter plants a dream he never lets go. As an adult, he sees Everest less as a trophy and more as the home of a revered goddess, a place to honor family he has lost.

There is an obstacle, though. Tenzing's family came to Nepal from Tibet, so he is welcome as a yak herder but is not fully accepted as a Sherpa. That sense of standing between worlds gives the first act its emotional pull.

The script is by Luke Davies, and it builds toward the 1953 expedition led by John Hunt. I will not say more than that. The history is well known, but the film's angle, which treats Tenzing as the hero rather than the helper, feels fresh.

What Works in Tenzing

The biggest strength is perspective. Many Everest stories treat Sherpas as background, and this one reverses that. The Sherpa language also gets real space on screen, which adds authenticity.

  • Location photography: The mountain feels vast and immediate, and the scenes shot among real Sherpas add texture.

  • Restraint: The film skips cheap action beats and lets the climb build through patience and faith.

  • Cultural framing: The idea of Everest versus Chomolungma runs through the story and gives the journey a spiritual weight.

As a history drama, it also stays clear and easy to follow. You do not need to know the 1953 expedition in detail to enjoy it.

Tenzing Cast and Performances

The Tenzing cast is led by Genden Phuntsok, and he carries the film. His Tenzing is driven, calm and stubborn in his belief in his own destiny. Audiences and critics alike have singled him out as compelling.

Tom Hiddleston plays Ed Hillary in a supporting role, and he fits it well. He lets Phuntsok hold the center while adding warmth and a touch of rivalry. Willem Dafoe appears as expedition leader John Hunt, and Johnny Flynn plays George Mallory.

Samdrup Dorje Lama plays the nine-year-old Tenzing, and Bhuchung Kata appears as a Sherpa. The younger and supporting players help ground the film in its setting.

Where Tenzing Stumbles

The film's respect can turn into caution. Some critics have called it formulaic and too sanitized, and I partly agree. Conflict, whether between climbers, cultures or egos, is often softened.

At 126 minutes, the pacing is steady rather than thrilling. If you want the white-knuckle tension of a survival thriller, this is not that film. It is closer to a reverent portrait than a dramatic dive into danger.

The familiar biopic structure also means few surprises. The film earns its emotion mainly through performance and place, not through bold storytelling.

Is Tenzing Worth Watching?

Yes, Tenzing is worth watching, especially if you enjoy thoughtful historical dramas. It tells a famous story from a long-overdue point of view, and it does so with beautiful scenery and a strong lead performance.

It is not the most daring biopic you will see this year. Still, its sincerity and cultural care make it more rewarding than many in the genre. Audience reaction so far is warm, with a TMDB score of 8.3 out of 10.

The Tenzing release date is 9 October 2026, and it is rated PG. If you like drama movie reviews or history movie reviews, it belongs on your list. For more background on the film, see its IMDb page.

Who Will Enjoy Tenzing

  • Fans of historical drama who like quiet, character-led storytelling over big spectacle.

Pros

  • Puts Tenzing Norgay at the center
  • Compelling lead from Genden Phuntsok
  • Immersive on-location Everest visuals

Cons

  • Formulaic biopic structure
  • Conflict feels sanitized
  • Steady pacing may lack tension

Our Verdict

Tenzing is a respectful, beautifully shot drama that gives a legendary climber his due. It plays safe, but Genden Phuntsok's performance makes the journey worthwhile.
