How we rate moviesIn this article
This Star Trek: Section 31 review starts with a simple question: can one great star carry a shaky story? Michelle Yeoh returns as the former Terran Emperor Philippa Georgiou in a streaming-era TV movie from director Olatunde Osunsanmi. The pitch is a covert Starfleet team with a shady past, but the execution is far less sure.
Star Trek: Section 31 Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The Star Trek: Section 31 plot follows Georgiou after she takes a job with Section 31, a secret division of Starfleet that protects the Federation by methods the public never sees. She is soon teamed with a ragtag crew of agents, each with their own baggage. Their first mission puts them on the trail of a dangerous weapon and a threat tied to Georgiou's own history.
The film is a mix of sci-fi action and drama, written by Craig Sweeny. It aims for a heist-style romp with a dose of regret, which is an appealing mix on paper. The trouble is that the script never quite decides which tone it wants to commit to.

What Works in Star Trek: Section 31
The sets and effects are the best part. The film looks polished enough to pass for a mid-budget space adventure, with colourful alien locales and some pleasing production design. For a franchise that has often looked cheap on streaming, that matters.
There is also a decent idea buried in the premise. A morally grey agency inside the most idealistic organisation in science fiction is fertile ground. Whenever the film leans on Georgiou's guilt and the cost of her past, it flickers into something more interesting.
At 96 minutes, it also moves quickly. You are rarely left sitting in a scene for long.
Star Trek: Section 31 Cast and Performances
Michelle Yeoh is the reason to watch. She brings authority, dry humour and physical grace to Georgiou, and she makes even clumsy dialogue sound like it matters. Audiences who loved the character will be glad to see her back in the spotlight.
The supporting cast is more of a mixed bag:
Omari Hardwick plays Alok Sahar, a steady presence who is given little to work with.
Sam Richardson plays Quasi, bringing a bit of comic energy.
Kacey Rohl appears as Rachel Garrett, a familiar name from Trek lore.
Sven Ruygrok (Fuzz) and Robert Kazinsky (Zeph) round out the team.
The actors are game, but the characters are thin sketches. Few of them get a moment that makes you care what happens next.
Where Star Trek: Section 31 Stumbles
The biggest problem is the writing. Many viewers have called the story convoluted and tonally confused, and it is easy to see why. Jokes, grim backstory and action beats keep colliding without settling into a rhythm.
The team dynamic never clicks either. A film like this lives or dies on chemistry, and the misfit crew feels assembled by checklist rather than grown from the story. The result is a caper without much sense of fun or stakes.
The direction is competent but unremarkable. Action scenes lack the punch you would expect from a star with Yeoh's martial arts pedigree, and the pacing can feel rushed rather than propulsive. Audience reception has been harsh, with a TMDB score of 4.7/10 from about 400 votes.
Is Star Trek: Section 31 Worth Watching?
Only if you are a devoted Trek completist or a Michelle Yeoh fan. The film is watchable thanks to its star and its production values, but it does not deliver the clever, character-driven story that its premise promises.
If you go in expecting a light, disposable sci-fi romp, you may find enough to enjoy. If you want the thoughtful spirit of classic Star Trek, you will likely come away disappointed. The Star Trek: Section 31 release date was 15 January 2025. For background on the production, see the Star Trek: Section 31 page on IMDb.
