Hell in Paradise (2025) Review: A Luxury Getaway Turns Into Survival

This Hell in Paradise review looks at a 2025 French action drama that swaps postcard beaches for a pressure cooker of fear. Directed by Leïla Sy, the film follows a migrant worker whose dream job at a Maldives resort goes terribly wrong. It runs a lean 102 minutes and rarely lets up.

Hell in Paradise Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Hell in Paradise plot starts with Nina, played by Nora Arnezeder, who lands work at a luxury hotel in the Maldives. For someone chasing a better life, the island looks like a lucky break. Then an incident changes everything.

Nina is falsely accused and told she faces a life sentence. From there, the story becomes a fight to escape and to prove her innocence. Traps and danger wait around every corner, and the film keeps the details of who is behind them under wraps.

The premise is simple, and that works in its favour. You understand the stakes within minutes, and the film spends its time on pursuit rather than setup.

What Works in Hell in Paradise

The central contrast is the film's best idea. A resort sells escape and ease, yet the people who clean the rooms and carry the bags live in a very different reality. Sy and writer Karine Silla use that gap to give the action a sharper social edge than the genre usually offers.

The pace also helps. At 102 minutes, the film has no time to sag, and the chase structure keeps tension steady.

• Strong premise: a wrongful accusation in an isolated setting is easy to follow and hard to look away from.

• Social undertone: the story touches on migrant vulnerability without turning into a lecture.

• Contrast of tone: bright, beautiful surroundings make the threat feel more unsettling.

Fans of action movie reviews will find plenty of familiar thrills here. The drama underneath gives them more weight than a standard chase picture.

Hell in Paradise Cast and Performances

The Hell in Paradise cast is led by Nora Arnezeder, who carries the film as Nina. She plays fear and stubbornness at once, and she sells the physical demands of a character always on the run. Her performance keeps the film grounded when the premise stretches.

Maria Bello appears as Sam, Nina's mother, and Joséphine de la Baume plays Valéria. Shubham Saraf (Tarik), Alyy Khan (Azaan) and Ranjit Krishnamma, as Nina's lawyer Manik, fill out the supporting group.

The ensemble gives the island a lived-in feel. Not every supporting role gets room to grow, but the cast lends credibility to a story that depends on trust and suspicion.

Where Hell in Paradise Stumbles

A thriller built on traps and escapes lives or dies on plausibility, and here the film sometimes asks for generous suspension of disbelief. Certain obstacles feel designed for the script rather than the setting. Viewers who like their tension realistic may roll their eyes at a few moments.

The supporting characters can also feel thinly sketched. With so much attention on Nina's flight, side figures serve the plot more than they reveal themselves. A little more depth would have raised the emotional stakes.

Finally, the film's social themes are strongest when implied. When it leans on them harder, the message competes with the momentum.

Is Hell in Paradise Worth Watching?

Yes, if you want a tight, tense survival story with something on its mind. The film is not a genre-reinventing masterpiece, but it is efficient, well led and confident in its premise. Audience feedback on TMDB sits at 7.3 out of 10, though from a small number of votes, and that matches my own view.

The drama gives the action purpose, and Arnezeder gives it heart. If you enjoy drama movie reviews that also deliver pace, this belongs on your list. For a similar mood of pressure and pursuit, you might also try our take on Neglected, which is another race against the clock.
