How we rate moviesIn this article
This Gunslingers review starts with a simple question: can a small-scale Western still hit hard? Brian Skiba's 2025 film has a cast of recognisable faces, a dusty frontier setting and a lot of gunfire. It also has a few ideas that are odder than you would expect.
Gunslingers Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The Gunslingers plot begins when the most wanted man in America arrives in a small Kentucky town. His reputation arrives with him, and so does a blood-thirsty mob that wants vengeance and a king's ransom. Brothers end up on opposite sides, and the town becomes a shooting gallery.
The setting is called Redemption, a name that tells you what kind of place it wants to be. According to audience reviews, the town is home to wanted criminals who have faked their deaths to escape the law. That is an unusual spin on the classic frontier town, and it gives the film its most interesting hook.
Skiba both wrote and directed, so the vision is his alone. It is a Western at heart, mixing drama with action across a lean 104 minutes.
What Works in Gunslingers
The premise is the best thing here. A town built on hidden identities gives every character a reason to lie, and that tension carries scenes even when the dialogue is plain. It also makes the arrival of a famous outlaw feel like a real threat rather than a simple visit.
The pace is brisk. The film keeps its running time tight and moves from standoff to standoff without much wandering.
A fun, slightly twisted spin on the Western small-town formula
A short runtime that rarely drags
Some memorable, eccentric character touches
If you enjoy action movie reviews that value momentum over polish, this will scratch that itch.
Gunslingers Cast and Performances
The Gunslingers cast is the main reason to press play. Stephen Dorff plays Thomas Keller, the figure at the centre of the trouble, and he brings his usual weary intensity. He suits the role of a man who cannot outrun his past.
Heather Graham plays Valerie Keller, and audience reviews mention her living above the saloon. Nicolas Cage appears as Ben, wearing a bowler hat and a cross according to viewers, which is exactly the sort of eccentric choice his fans will want. Randall Batinkoff (Doc), Cooper Barnes (Levi) and Scarlet Rose Stallone (Bella) round out the main players.
Cage Does Cage
Cage's presence is a draw, but this is a team effort rather than a one-man show. Dorff holds the story together, while Cage adds colour around the edges.
Where Gunslingers Stumbles
The film runs on a modest budget, and it shows. The scale of the town and the action never feels as big as the setup promises. Some shootouts feel like they happen because the genre demands them, not because the story needs them.
The tone can also wobble. The film tries to be a grim drama about redemption and a pulpy shoot-'em-up at once, and the two halves do not always sit comfortably together. Audience scores sit at around 6.1 out of 10, which matches the sense of a decent but uneven ride.
Characters outside the leads are thinly drawn. The brotherly conflict has promise, but it does not get the room to land emotionally.
Is Gunslingers Worth Watching?
Yes, if you are a Western fan or a Nicolas Cage completist, Gunslingers is worth watching on a quiet evening. It will not rewrite the genre, but it offers enough oddity, gunplay and star power to fill 104 minutes.
If you want a polished epic, look elsewhere. If you want a scrappy, strange frontier tale with a good hook, this works. You can browse more drama movie reviews on the site if you want something with deeper character work.
