How we rate moviesIn this article
Our Flight Risk review starts with a simple pitch: three people, one small plane, and a very long way to go. Mel Gibson directs this 2025 action thriller on a tight 91-minute runtime, and it often plays like a stage play at 10,000 feet. The idea is sharp, but the execution is bumpier.
Flight Risk Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The Flight Risk plot is easy to explain. Deputy Marshal Madolyn Harris tracks down Winston, an accountant for a crime family, who is hiding out in the Alaskan wilderness. She needs to get him to New York to testify, and the only way out is a single-prop plane.
Their pilot, Daryl Booth, is relentlessly chatty and upbeat. Then Madolyn notices a few details that don't add up, and the mood in the cockpit shifts. From there, the film becomes a game of suspicion, with each person sizing up the others.
The tagline, "Y'all need a pilot?", tells you the tone Gibson is aiming for: a little menace, a little grin. If you like action movie reviews built around a single location, the setup will appeal.
What Works in Flight Risk
The claustrophobia is the film's best asset. With so little room to move, every glance and shift in the seat matters. Gibson keeps the camera close, and the opening cabin scenes pull you in quickly.
The exterior flying shots are also convincing. The takeoff and the views over the Alaskan landscape give the film some scale it wouldn't otherwise have. For a movie that spends most of its time in a tiny cockpit, those moments are a welcome breath of air.
The twisty structure helps too. Even when the suspense is uneven, the question of who is lying keeps you watching. The short runtime means the film rarely overstays its welcome.
Flight Risk Cast and Performances
The Flight Risk cast is small, and that puts a lot on three actors.
Mark Wahlberg plays Daryl Booth with an odd, amusing accent and a cheerful oddness that sets the film's tone. Some viewers will find him fun, others a bit much, but he commits fully.
Michelle Dockery brings steadiness as Madolyn Harris, the marshal who has to stay sharp while things unravel.
Topher Grace plays Winston and handles the serious moments better than the jokes, even when the dialogue lets him down.
Several supporting characters, including Leah Remini as Van Sant, Maaz Ali as Hassan and Paul Ben-Victor as Coleridge, are heard as voices rather than seen. They add pressure from outside the cockpit but rarely leave a strong mark.
Where Flight Risk Stumbles
The biggest problem is consistency. The suspense rises and falls, and once the plane is in the air the film settles into a predictable back-and-forth between characters. Gibson's direction is competent, but it lacks real flair.
Humour and Dialogue
The attempts at comedy are hit-and-miss. Some banter lands, but a fair amount feels awkward, and a few lines are cringe-inducing. That tonal wobble undercuts the tension just when it should tighten.
Plausibility
The script asks you to accept some questionable decisions from its characters. The espionage and intrigue angle promises more than it delivers, and the story never fully develops its ideas. Audiences expecting a sharp, believable thriller may feel let down.
Is Flight Risk Worth Watching?
Flight Risk is worth watching if your expectations are modest, but it is not a must-see. Audience reactions are mixed, with a 5.9/10 score on TMDB, and that feels fair. It is a watchable, fairly short thriller with a good hook, decent performances and some uneven writing.
The film arrived on 22 January 2025, and its release date puts it among the many lean action thrillers that favour a single idea over big set pieces. If you want something with more spectacle, browse our thriller movie reviews for alternatives. For a similar lower-key action pick, see our take on Shadow Force.
Watch it for the cast and the cockpit tension, and forgive the bumps.
Who Will Enjoy Flight Risk
Fans of contained, single-location thrillers who don't mind a little silliness.
Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Dockery viewers curious to see them in a tense two-hander.
Anyone who wants a quick, 91-minute action drama for a casual night in.
Pros
- Tense, claustrophobic cockpit setup
- Convincing exterior flying shots
- Committed performances from the three leads
- Short runtime keeps the pace brisk
Cons
- Uneven suspense once the plane is airborne
- Hit-and-miss humour and clunky dialogue
- Predictable character back-and-forth
Our Verdict
Flight Risk has a smart hook and a game cast, but uneven suspense and shaky writing keep it grounded. It is a modest, watchable thriller rather than a standout.
