How we rate moviesIn this article
This Dogulu review looks at a 2025 Turkish action drama about two friends who leave prison and walk straight into a blood feud. Director Bilal Kalyoncu builds the film around loyalty, revenge and survival in a hostile city. The idea is familiar but promising, and the reception so far is far from kind.
Dogulu Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The Dogulu plot starts with a release. Fırat Doğulu and his companion Akın leave prison after many years behind bars. Freedom does not bring peace. Almost at once, they are caught in a vendetta that tests their loyalty and their sense of justice.
Fırat comes from eastern Turkey and wants to build a life in Istanbul. That puts him and Akın in the path of the city's powerful figures, the people who see themselves as its owners. The film frames this as a clash between outsiders and entrenched power.
This is the set-up and nothing more. The film's later turns are best discovered on screen.
What Works in Dogulu
The premise is the film's strongest card. Ex-convicts returning to a world that has moved on is a reliable engine for both action and drama. Adding an outsider from the East against Istanbul's elite gives the story a regional and class edge that many revenge films lack.
The pacing is also a plus on paper. At roughly 90 minutes, the film has little room for padding. Runtime sources disagree, though: IMDb and Box Office Mojo list 1h 30m, while Amazon lists 1h 41m.
The friendship at the centre is the right emotional hook. A story about two men who have only each other gives the violence something to push against. One German-language Letterboxd reviewer, while harshly negative overall, still noted that the plot reads as interesting.
Dogulu Cast and Performances
The Dogulu cast features Savaş Satış, Onur Akbay, Özgür Meriç, Gürkan Uygun, Cansel Elçin and Melis İşiten. The sources I could check do not confirm which actor plays Fırat and which plays Akın, so I will not guess at individual performances.
What can be said is that the ensemble brings recognisable names from Turkish screen work to a lean genre story. Cansel Elçin is the cast member most likely to add some dramatic weight beyond the fight scenes. With so little critical coverage available, judging the acting in detail is difficult.
Where Dogulu Stumbles
The reception is the biggest problem. IMDb shows a rating of about 3.6 from roughly 400 votes on one listing. Rotten Tomatoes lists no critic reviews, and the TMDB score of 6.5 rests on only two votes, which means very little.
The one review I found was blunt, calling it a strong candidate for the reviewer's worst cinema film of 2025. That is a single opinion, but it matches the weak audience number. Familiar revenge beats and a low-budget feel appear to be the likely sticking points for viewers.
There is also little information about distribution. I found no confirmed international release date beyond Turkey on 2025-01-01, so access may be limited for English-speaking viewers. If you hunt for it, check the IMDb page for the latest details.
Is Dogulu Worth Watching?
It is worth watching only if you are a committed fan of Turkish action cinema or revenge stories. The premise has appeal, but the audience score of 3.6 on IMDb is a clear warning. Everyone else can safely skip it.

The film is rated 16+ in Turkey on TMDB. Expect violence and mature themes.
