Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower (2025) Review: Judge Dee Returns for Supernatural Intrigue

This Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower review looks at the latest entry in China's long-running Judge Dee franchise, directed by Fang Yinghua. It mixes period action with horror and mystery, and it arrives with very little critical coverage so far. Here is what we can say about the setup, the cast and who it suits, with no spoilers.

Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower plot centers on Judge Dee, played by Benny Chan Ho-Man. He starts looking into a conspiracy tied to a dangerous elixir, while strange and supernatural disturbances unsettle the people around it. The film is written by Yang Shengmeng.

That premise fits the series well. Dee is a clever investigator who treats the impossible as a puzzle to be solved. Here the puzzle is a mysterious potion and the unease that follows it.

The film was listed for release in China on 15 December 2025. We could not verify a release in other regions, so we can't say where to watch Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower outside China.

What Works in Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower

The best idea is the blend of genres. An action-horror take on a detective story gives the film room to move between fights, eerie set pieces and slow-burn deduction. It is a good fit for a hero who has always sat between history and fantasy.

• A strong hook: a deadly elixir is easy to grasp and carries natural dread.

• A familiar hero: Judge Dee is a durable character, so new viewers can follow along without much homework.

• A tonal mix: supernatural trouble raises the stakes beyond an ordinary crime case.

Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower Cast and Performances

The Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower cast is led by Benny Chan Ho-Man as Di Renjie. Shang Na plays Shangguan Jinger, and Jin Ning appears as Liu Yue'er. The supporting players include Liu Jin as Lu Yingjie, Cui Dongchen as Li Jizong and Yue Xunyu as Gao Neishi.

We have not seen enough published material to judge the performances in detail, so we will not pretend otherwise. What the casting does suggest is an ensemble built around court figures, officials and suspects, which is the classic Dee formula. The detective is surrounded by people who may or may not be telling the truth.

Where Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower Stumbles

The biggest problem is the lack of evidence about quality. We found no published critic reviews and no Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic scores. TMDB shows a single user rating of 2.0 out of 10, but one vote tells us almost nothing.

There are also practical gaps. The runtime is unknown, and there is no confirmed official trailer we can point to. The only trailer we found sits on a channel that may not be affiliated with the studio, so treat it with caution.

Genre blends can also be risky. Action, horror and detective work do not always share a screen comfortably, and the franchise has a reputation to live up to. Until more viewers weigh in, expect some uncertainty.

Is Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower Worth Watching?

It is worth a look if you already enjoy Judge Dee stories or Chinese period action, but it is a cautious recommendation. The premise is appealing and the genre mix is promising. Reception is too thin to promise more.

If you want a safe bet, wait for more reviews and a confirmed release in your region. If you are curious and the franchise appeals to you, the combination of mystery, action and horror is a reasonable reason to try it. For other recent genre picks, see our Thunderbolt Rescue review.
