Detective Dee Flower of Underworld (2025) Review: Alchemy, Hallucinations And A Palace Plot

This Detective Dee Flower of Underworld review comes with a warning: very little critical reaction exists yet, so this is a close look at the premise and what the film promises. The 2025 Chinese action mystery sends the famous detective into a story of immortality potions and palace intrigue. It is also short, which changes the question of whether it deserves your evening.

Detective Dee Flower of Underworld Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Detective Dee Flower of Underworld plot unfolds in the Tianshou era, when Empress Wu Zetian rules the empire. Strange deaths are spreading through the city of Luzhou. The local official, Kong Chengye, is consumed by Daoist alchemy and believes he can brew an elixir of immortality.

His search centres on a rare herb, described as a legendary flower rumoured to cause hallucinations. As unrest grows, Detective Dee is called in to find out what is really happening. The setup points toward a conspiracy bigger than a few suspicious deaths, with supernatural dread running underneath.

The film is also known in Chinese as 狄仁杰之彼岸奇花, and some listings call it Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower. It is directed by Fang Yinghua from a script by Yang Shengmeng.

What Works in Detective Dee Flower of Underworld

The premise is the film's best asset. A detective story in which the poison may also be a hallucinogen lets the mystery blur reality and nightmare. That suits the Dee tradition, where rational deduction meets the uncanny.

The length helps too. At roughly 75 minutes, going by an IMDb listing, the film has little room to sag.

• A strong hook: an immortality elixir, a rare flower and a ruler under threat give the story clear stakes.

• A lean format: a short runtime suits a case that needs to keep moving.

• A familiar hero: Dee is a dependable lead for a mystery with a genre twist.

The Tang court is also a rich setting for action. Intrigue, secret ambitions and a looming military threat give any fight scene a purpose beyond spectacle.

Detective Dee Flower of Underworld Cast and Performances

The Detective Dee Flower of Underworld cast is led by Benny Chan Ho-Man as Di Renjie. Shang Na plays Shangguan Jinger, and Jin Ning appears as Liu Yue'er. Liu Jin plays Lu Yingjie, Cui Dongchen is Li Jizong, and Yue Xunyu is Gao Neishi.

I have not seen enough published material to judge individual performances, so I won't pretend otherwise. What the casting suggests is an ensemble built around Dee and the court figures circling him. Whether those characters get room to breathe in a 75-minute film is the open question.

Where Detective Dee Flower of Underworld Stumbles

The biggest concern is the lack of evidence. I found no critic reviews, no aggregate scores and no clear audience consensus. The only user rating on TMDB is a single vote of 2.0, which is far too thin to mean anything, but it offers no reassurance either.

The short runtime cuts both ways. A plot with alchemy, a rebel general, supernatural chaos and an empress at risk is a lot to fit in. There is a real chance the mystery feels rushed or that the supporting characters stay sketchy.

Availability is another obstacle. I could not confirm a US release, a rating or an official trailer, so viewers outside China may struggle to find it. Treat any unofficial upload with caution.

Is Detective Dee Flower of Underworld Worth Watching?

It is worth a try if you already love Detective Dee stories, though you should keep expectations modest. The premise is appealing, the runtime is gentle, and the genre blend of action, mystery and the supernatural has plenty of room to entertain.

But there is no critical backing yet, and the film's quality is unproven. Wait for more reviews if you want certainty. If you simply like Chinese period mysteries and can find a legitimate way to watch, the low time commitment makes it a low-risk gamble.
