This codename: devil review covers a Polish action thriller that mixes gritty gunplay with a story about veterans struggling to fit back into civilian life. Directed by Błażej Jankowiak, the film aims for hard-hitting action and a human core. It only partly delivers on both.

Codename: Devil Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

For 25 years the army has been the only family Maks Achtelrik knows. Known as "Diabeł" (the Devil), he leaves service and finds that nothing fills the void. He returns to his hometown for his father's funeral.

There he walks straight into a gang war. As the Codename: Devil plot unfolds, family secrets begin to come to light, and a man trained for battle has to decide which fight is his. I'll leave the rest for you to discover.

The film's original Polish title is Diabeł, and it reached audiences on 29 November 2024. The Codename: Devil release date put it in the crowded end-of-year slot, where smaller action films can easily get lost. At 110 minutes, it moves at a steady pace.

What Works in Codename: Devil

The action is the main draw. Several viewers praise the gunplay as convincing, with a sense of how a private contractor might really operate. One Letterboxd reviewer says it is grittier and leans less on tricks than a typical American film.

The backstory is also simple and clear. It gives the violence enough context without slowing things down. That clarity helps the action feel purposeful rather than random.

The film also nods to a real issue: veterans who find it hard to adapt after service. When it focuses on that, the lead becomes easy to sympathise with. It is the most interesting thing the script offers.

Codename: Devil Cast and Performances

The Codename: Devil cast is led by Eryk Lubos as Maks "Diabeł" Achtelrik. He carries the film with a heavy, weary presence, and some viewers say you invest in him easily. Acting overall is described as above average.

The supporting players include:

  • Paulina Gałązka as Kaja Kloch

  • Krzysztof Stroiński as Janusz Dworski

  • Karol Bernacki as "Zimny"

  • Aleksandra Popławska as Paulina "Łabędź"

  • Piotr Trojan as Romuald Kantor

The cast gives the material more weight than the dialogue deserves. Lubos in particular sells the idea of a man who is better in combat than in conversation.

Where Codename: Devil Stumbles

The biggest complaint is the writing. One IMDb reviewer calls the dialogue dull and the plot shallow, and that criticism has some basis. Between the set pieces, the story rarely rises above familiar revenge-thriller beats.

The tone is also unsettled. A Letterboxd reviewer says the film cannot decide whether it wants to be a Polish take on Nobody or John Wick, or a serious awareness piece about veterans in Poland. Those two goals pull against each other. The Guardian's review headline described it as a dour, humourless action film.

At least one viewer also felt the ending needed something more. I won't say more than that here.

Is Codename: Devil Worth Watching?

Yes, if you want a lean, grounded action film and can forgive thin writing. The gunplay and the lead performance are real strengths. The drama around them is less convincing.

Critical reception is mixed. IMDb sits at 6.0/10, Letterboxd at roughly 3 out of 5 and JustWatch at 52%. That fits what I saw: a decent genre piece, not a standout.

Who Will Enjoy Codename: Devil

  • Fans of grounded, gritty gunfights who prefer realism over flashy tricks.

  • Viewers curious about European action cinema beyond Hollywood.

  • Anyone who likes stories about veterans coming home to a world that no longer fits them.

Pros

  • Convincing, gritty gunplay
  • Strong lead performance from Eryk Lubos
  • Clear, easy-to-follow setup
  • Brings attention to veterans' struggles

Cons

  • Dull, shallow dialogue
  • Unsettled tone between action and message
  • Ending may feel underwhelming

Our Verdict

Codename: Devil is a solid, gritty Polish action thriller held back by thin writing and an uncertain tone. The gunplay and Eryk Lubos make it a decent watch for genre fans.
