Our Captain America: Brave New World review starts with a simple point: Anthony Mackie is a worthy man to carry the shield. The film around him is far less sure of itself. It is a watchable, sometimes thrilling action adventure that never quite lives up to its big ideas.
Julius Onah directs this fourth Captain America film, which runs 119 minutes and is rated PG-13. It arrived in the United States on February 12, 2025.
Captain America: Brave New World Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The Captain America: Brave New World plot picks up with Sam Wilson settling into his role as Captain America. He meets Thaddeus Ross, who has just been elected U.S. President, and soon finds himself in the middle of an international incident.
From there, Sam has to work out the reason behind a shadowy global plot. The target is a rare, powerful material at the centre of a delicate treaty between world powers. The real mastermind stays hidden, and the film wants you to guess who is pulling the strings.
The setup nods to the political-conspiracy style of earlier Captain America stories. It promises paranoia and big choices, though it delivers them in a lighter, safer way than you might hope.
What Works in Captain America: Brave New World
The star is the biggest asset. Mackie gives Sam a warm, grounded presence, and he sells the idea of a man who is both a global symbol and an ordinary person worried about living up to the title.
The action is also a highlight. Onah stages several well-crafted set pieces, and Sam's more agile, flight-based fighting style feels different from Steve Rogers' brute force. These scenes give the film its best moments of pure fun.
A confident, charismatic lead performance
Clear, energetic action that is easy to follow
A short runtime that keeps the pace moving
It also helps that the film leans into the political thriller genre for a stretch. When it focuses on trust, power and responsibility, it finds a sharper edge than most superhero sequels.
Captain America: Brave New World Cast and Performances
The Captain America: Brave New World cast is led by Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson. Harrison Ford steps in as President Thaddeus Ross, bringing gruff authority and a weary intensity to a role with plenty of baggage.
Danny Ramirez returns as Joaquin Torres, Sam's eager partner, and adds easy humour and heart. Shira Haas plays Ruth Bat-Seraph, Tim Blake Nelson is Samuel Sterns, and Carl Lumbly appears as Isaiah Bradley.
The actors do solid work with what they are given. Some supporting characters, though, feel more like set-up for future stories than fully formed people.
Where Captain America: Brave New World Stumbles
The main problem is that the story never builds enough tension. A global conspiracy should feel urgent, but the plot leans on familiar save-the-world beats, and some of the key ideas feel thin or confusing. One reviewer joked that it is the same old yarn in new packaging, and that is not far off.
The production also shows its seams. Some visual effects look rushed, and a few scenes feel stitched together, as if the film changed direction along the way. The result is a movie that has flashes of quality but lacks a strong, steady identity.
Fans hoping for the sharp spy-thriller edge of earlier entries may leave a little disappointed. It is entertaining, but rarely memorable.
Is Captain America: Brave New World Worth Watching?
Yes, if you go in with moderate expectations. Is Captain America: Brave New World worth watching? It is a decent, fun Marvel adventure carried by its lead, but it does not reach the high bar set by its predecessors.
Audience reactions have been mixed to mildly positive, and that feels fair. You get a few real thrills, a likeable hero and an easy two hours. You do not get a story that will stick with you.
