How we rate moviesIn this article
This Agent Recon review starts with a simple question: can a small-scale sci-fi action film get by on enthusiasm alone? Derek Ting writes, directs and stars in this 2024 American B-movie, and he brings Chuck Norris and Marc Singer along for the ride. The result is modest, uneven and aimed at a very particular audience.
Agent Recon Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The Agent Recon plot is pure genre pulp. A covert military task force tracks a strange energy disturbance to a secret base in New Mexico, where someone is suspected of experimenting on alien technology. Alastair, the captain of a secret security unit, calls in Jim, a man with superhuman abilities, to join the mission.
Once the team arrives, they run into an unknown being of extraordinary strength and speed. It can also control an army of mindless warriors. The team must fight through those hordes to stop a threat to humanity itself.
That setup is easy to follow, and it moves quickly. At just 85 minutes, the film doesn't waste much time on preamble.
What Works in Agent Recon
The premise has a pleasingly old-school feel. A secret base, a shadowy experiment and a super-powered recruit are the building blocks of many a cult action flick, and the film leans into them without irony.
Brisk length: The short runtime keeps the film from overstaying its welcome.
Clear stakes: Anyone can grasp the mission within minutes.
Genre spirit: It mixes action and sci-fi in the way fans of direct-to-video adventures expect.
There is also something endearing about a filmmaker taking on writing, directing and the lead role at once. Ting clearly cares about the material, and that earnestness occasionally comes through.
Agent Recon Cast and Performances
The Agent Recon cast is led by Derek Ting as Jim Yung. He carries the film with a physical, committed performance, though the dialogue gives him little to work with.
Chuck Norris appears as Alastair, and his name is the biggest draw on the poster. Marc Singer plays Colonel Green, adding some veteran presence. Sylvia Kwan (Tanya), Jason Scott Jenkins (Miller) and Matthew Ryan Burnett (Aaron Klak) round out the ensemble.
The performances are uneven, as you might expect from a production at this scale. Familiar faces lend credibility, but the material rarely lets anyone dig in.
Where Agent Recon Stumbles
The film's biggest problem is ambition outrunning resources. An alien threat and a horde of mindless warriors need strong effects, sharp staging and tight editing, and those are the areas where the limits show.
The script is also thin. Characters mostly exist to deliver exposition or set up the next fight, so it is hard to care when the stakes rise. Audience feedback reflects this: the film holds a TMDB audience score of 3.9/10 from 24 votes, a small sample but a telling one.
Pacing is another weak spot. Even at 85 minutes, the action beats can feel repetitive, because the enemy hordes are faceless and the fights follow a similar rhythm.
Is Agent Recon Worth Watching?
For most viewers, Agent Recon is not worth watching, but it may suit a very specific mood. If you want a polished sci-fi thriller, look elsewhere. If you enjoy low-budget action curiosities and are curious about Chuck Norris in a supporting turn, it can be a harmless way to spend an hour and a half.
The Agent Recon release date was June 21, 2024, and it arrived with little fanfare. Go in with modest expectations and you will be better placed to enjoy the film's earnest charm. For more options, browse our action movie reviews or the sci-fi movie reviews on the site.
