How we rate moviesIn this article
This Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War review starts with a simple question: does the analyst-turned-field-hero still have enough juice for a feature-length outing? John Krasinski returns as Ryan in a streaming-only spy thriller directed by Andrew Bernstein. The answer is mixed, but there is fun to be had.
Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The plot kicks off when an international covert mission turns up something much nastier than expected: a deadly conspiracy. Ryan is pulled back into the field and reunites with CIA allies Mike November and James Greer. They are joined by MI6 officer Emma Marlowe (some sources spell it Marlow).
Their target is a rogue black-ops unit, and the hook is that this enemy appears to anticipate the team's every move. That gives the story a cat-and-mouse tension, with the heroes never sure who is one step ahead. I will stop there, because the fun is in watching the trap tighten.
The screenplay comes from Aaron Rabin and Krasinski, from a story by Noah Oppenheim and Krasinski, and builds on characters created by Tom Clancy. At 107 minutes, the film moves quickly and rarely lingers.
What Works in Ghost War
The biggest strength is momentum. This is an action thriller built around chases, firefights and tense planning, and it keeps the pace brisk. Some critics were kind on this front: Randy Myers of the San Jose Mercury News gave it 3 out of 4 and said Krasinski makes you care whether Ryan escapes each jam.
The central idea of a hunted team also helps. Knowing the opposition is reading their moves gives ordinary scenes a little paranoia.
A lean runtime with few dull stretches
A clear hook that is easy to follow, even for newcomers to the franchise
Plenty of action set pieces for fans of the genre

Ghost War Cast and Performances
The Ghost War cast is the film's safest bet. Krasinski settles back into Ryan as an earnest, capable everyman, and he sells the strain of being outmaneuvered. Wendell Pierce as James Greer and Michael Kelly as Mike November bring easy, lived-in chemistry that suggests years of shared history.
Sienna Miller plays Emma Marlowe, the MI6 officer who joins the team, adding a sharper edge to the group. Betty Gabriel appears as Elizabeth Wright, and Max Beesley also features in the ensemble. The supporting players do solid work, though the script does not always give them much to chew on.
Where Ghost War Stumbles
The weak spot is depth. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter argued that Krasinski, as co-writer, seems uninterested in character development or meaningful dialogue, and that criticism has some merit. Characters tend to exist to serve the mission rather than to feel like people.
The approach also feels conventional. Brian Lowry of Status News gave it 5 out of 10, noting plenty of action but a very familiar shape. Maxance Vincent of InSession Film was harsher, giving it a D+ and criticizing the direction and editing of the action.
The reception reflects that split. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 39% Tomatometer from 51 reviews, and IMDb shows 5.7 out of 10. It is not a disaster, but it is far from a standout.
Is Ghost War Worth Watching?
Yes, if you are a fan of the franchise or of mid-level spy thrillers, and you go in with measured expectations. It is a competent, fast-moving evening of action that does not demand much from you. It is also forgettable, and it will not change anyone's mind about the genre.
The film is rated R and streams on Prime Video, so it works as an easy weeknight pick rather than a must-see event. If you want sharper character work in the same vein, you might prefer a darker crime story like Kartavya, a cop drama about duty and family.
