How we rate moviesIn this article
This Hot Spot review covers Agnieszka Smoczyńska's English-language sci-fi thriller, a film that mixes detective noir with a chilly vision of machine rule. It arrives with striking ideas and a divided critical response. Here is what to expect before you buy a ticket.
Hot Spot Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The Hot Spot plot is set in a near-future world run by sentient AI. A private investigator takes on a murder case that begins at a refugee camp built inside a disused airport. The opening is brutal and sets a hard, grim tone.
As he digs, the detective finds signs of a rebel group that might be able to undermine the digital overlord. The source material also hints that the search for truth strains his mind and his marriage. Pressure builds in his private life as much as in the case itself.
The film runs 101 minutes and carries an R rating for strong violent content, gore, graphic nudity, sexual content and brief language. It is not a casual family watch.
What Works in Hot Spot
Smoczyńska is a director with a taste for the strange, and that shows here. One critic on Rotten Tomatoes praised the film's restless, vigorously witty imagination, and that energy is its best quality. This is an action and crime film that would rather unsettle you than follow a formula.
A Bold Opening
The early murder investigation earns the most praise from reviewers. It is violent, tense and clear about the rules of this world. If you like your noir sharp and bleak, the first stretch delivers.
Ideas Over Formula
The setup of an AI overlord, a refugee camp and a rebel underground has plenty of political and emotional weight. The film sets these pieces in a Polish, Greek, Swedish and Norwegian co-production, and that international feel gives it a look and mood unlike a typical Hollywood sci-fi thriller.
Hot Spot Cast and Performances
The Hot Spot cast is led by Andrzej Konopka as the detective. Sources disagree on the name: one lists him as Jan 623, while Focus Features and Rotten Tomatoes list Djonny. Either way, he carries the story as a man slowly coming apart.
Noomi Rapace plays Rana, a refugee, and Reika Kirishima plays Ayka, the detective's wife. Filippa Kaye appears as Maria, George Aurimas Cris as Zen, the couple's son, and Niki Sereti as Bossa, the detective's supervisor.
The ensemble gives the film an international flavour. The material, though, keeps most characters at a distance, so the performances read as cool and controlled rather than warm.
Where Hot Spot Stumbles
The biggest complaint is structure. A reviewer at Filmbooster noted that the case is resolved almost immediately, after which the film gradually turns into a slow, dreamlike and purely sensory experiment. That shift will lose viewers who came for a twisting mystery.
The numbers reflect the split. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 23% Tomatometer from 22 reviews and a 25% Popcornmeter, while IMDb shows 3.8/10 from a small number of votes. Those are rough scores, but they suggest many viewers found the film hard to connect with.
With a worldwide gross reported at about USD 200,000, it is also clearly a niche release. Expect an art-house sensibility rather than a crowd-pleaser.
Is Hot Spot Worth Watching?
It is worth watching if you enjoy ambitious, odd science fiction and can forgive a loose plot. The first act is gripping and the ideas stay interesting, but the film trades narrative drive for mood. Viewers who want a tidy detective story will likely be frustrated.
The film opens in US theaters on August 21, 2026, after a Fantasia festival premiere on July 24. The Hot Spot release date in Poland is September 25, 2026. You can read more on the Hot Spot Wikipedia page).

Who Will Enjoy Hot Spot
Fans of art-house sci-fi and dystopian noir who value atmosphere over plot.
Viewers who like Agnieszka Smoczyńska's offbeat, boundary-pushing style.
Adults comfortable with graphic violence, nudity and sexual content.
Pros
- Striking, inventive opening murder case
- Bold AI-ruled world with political weight
- Distinctive international look and tone
Cons
- Case resolves too quickly
- Second half turns slow and abstract
- Weak critical and audience scores
Our Verdict
Hot Spot is a daring but uneven sci-fi noir that starts strong and then drifts into dreamlike abstraction. It will reward patient art-house fans more than thriller seekers.
